TRIP OVERVIEW UPPER DOLPO TREK 27 DAYS
Upper Dolpo Trek is trek that leads to the settlement of Tibetan community. Situated in the Middle- Western development region of the country, Dolpo is the largest district of Nepal and covers about six percent of the total land of Nepal. It is one of the most remote regions of the country. Even though it is a remote area, it however, has abundant natural resources making it naturally rich. We can find enormous amount of vegetation and a large number of animals. Dolpo is divided into two regions Upper Dolpo and Lower Dolpo. Upper Dolpo is a restricted area and requires a fee for tourists that has indeed made the region already very exclusive where Crystal Mountain, Dolpo’s own version of Mount Kailash to show their devotion. We will be able to observe such traditions on our Upper Dolpo Trek.
The Upper Dolpa Trek is in a restricted area, because of which a fee is charged. The toursits are charged a fee of USD 500 for the first 10 days, and USD 50 for each additional day after 10 days. There are a number of foreigneers that come to visit this region and go on the trek. The maximum people that come come for trekking in this region is around 250. Because of the natural beauty and restriction put, the trekking route of Upper Dolpo has been considered very special and an exclusive experience.
The trek begins from Kathmandu and takes 21 days to be completed which includes the arrival and departure.
Day 1: Arrival at Kathmandu
We will have our staff come to welcome you at the Tribuwan International Airport and have you brought at the hotel. You will get some time to rest here and prepare yourself for the journey. After a delightful meal you can rest for the night.
Day 2: Kathmandu to Nepalgunj
The next morning, we will take an early flight to Nepalgunj which will only take a few minutes. We can spend the day observing local culture, market and temples at Nepalgunj and spend the night there.
Day 3: Nepalgunj to Juphal to Chhepka
The next morning, we will start early. We will fly to Juphal which is rests at an altitude of 2475 meters. From there we will spend the day trekking for a few hours to Chhepka. Chhepka is at the height of 2838 meters above the sea level. We will reach Chhepka after walking for about six hours.
Day 4: Chhepka to Chunuwar
We will begin our trek to Chunuwar from Chhepka. The day will consist of a walk for around 5-6 hours which will follow a trail along the beautiful view of nature around. Chunuwar is at 3110meters where we will spend the night.
Day 5: Chunuwar to Phoksundo Lake
The next morning, we will have breakfast at Chunuwar and head towards Ringmo where we will find our main trekking route. This will lead us to Lake Phoksundo that lies at an altitude of 3733 meters above the sea level. It will take us 3-4 hours to reach the lake where we will spend the night at.
Day 6: Chunemba
We will resume our journey the next morning early. The trekking route passes through a trail of beautiful views of natural wilderness. We wil reach Chunemba after about 5 hours long trek, which is 3639meters high.
Day 7: Chunemba to Snow Field Camp
Snowfield Camp will be our next destination. We will reach there from Chunemba which is about 7 hours away and is at an altitude of 4400 meters. The higher we go, the less vegetation and settlements we will observe.
Day 8: Snow Field to Shey Gompa
After the night at Snow Fields Camp, we will move to Shey Gompa. The path goes through Kang La pass which is at the height of 5375meters and will take us six hours to complete. Say Gompa lies at the height of 4400 meters.
Day 9: Shey Gompa to Namjung
Trekking to Namjung will begin early from Shey Gompa. Namjung is a beautiful place which goes through Shey La pass at the height of 5000 meteres. This route can be difficult as trekkers face breathing problem in this trail. After six hours walk we will reach Namjung which is at the height of 4400 meters above the sea level.
Day 10: Namjung to Saldang
This day we will embark our journey to a lower altitude and proceed to Saldang which is located at an altitude of 4060m. Observing the panoramic view of mountains, we will have to walk for about three hours to reach Saldang.
Day 11: Saldang to Sibu
The trail this day consists of beautiful fields, monasteries and a river that follows the trail. We will follow the river-Nam Kong and watch the settlement of people on the way. After walking through the trail, we will reach Sibu where we will rest for the day.
Day 12: Trekking to Jeng la Phedi
We will begin an early morning expedition to Jeng la Phedi from Sibu. Jang la Phedi is around 5-6 hours away from Sibu and is via steep hills. We will need to be careful to reach Jeng La Pass at the altitude of 4900m.
Day 13: Heading to Tokyu Goan from Jeng La Phedi
To observe beautiful snowy mountains glistening under the golden sun, we will have to walk for 5-6 hours uphill from where we will reach Tokyu Monastery. We will spend the night at Tokyu Goan at the altitude 4200meters above the sea level.
Day 14: Trek to Dho Tarap
The fourteenth day will lead us to Dho Trap. The trekking time is almost the same as the day before-5 to 6 hours. We will come across a local village which is practically surrounded by stone walls. We will spend the night there.
Day 15: Dho Tarap to Tarap Khola
The trekking on this day will be longer than before which will take about 7-8 hours. We will reach Tarap Khola after we make our way through the forest of Juniper and Wild Rose. We will reach the river further east where we can camp for the night.
Day 16: Trek to Khani Gaon
Observing the views of gorge, mountains and narrow bridges we will get on our trekking route that will take us to Khani Gaon. It will take us 4-5 hours to reach Khani Gaon from Tarap Khola. Khani Gaon will be our station for the night which is 3150 meters above the sea level.
Day 17: Khani Gaon to Tarakot
We will head towards Tarakot from Khani Gaon via Lalberi. From Lalberi we will head downhill and reach Tarakot at an altitude of 2537 meters. We will rest at Tarakot after walking for about 4-5 hours.
Day 18: Tarakot to Dunai
We will follow beautiful Bheri River from Tarakot for about 6 hours and reach Dunai. Dunai rests at 2140 meters where we will spend the night. The main trail will lead us to Dunai.
Day 19: Dunai to Jhuphal
The route now is shorter and will only take about 3 hours form Dunai. We will follow the trail along the same river-River Bheri and reach Jhupal which is at an altitude of 2320 meters and stay there for the night.
Day 20: Jhupal to Nepalgunj to Kathmandu
We will head back to Nepalgunj from Jhupal. We will take a plane to Nepalgunj which should take us several minutes to reach Nepalgunj. We will have our lunch at Nepalgunj and head back to the airport to get back to Kathmandu.
Day 21: Farewell
After a peaceful night at Kathmandu, we will arrange for your departure. The team will take you to the airport and help you with the departure process. We will arrange a farewell program for the successful Upper Dolpo trekking we had.
